If there were to be an account of the history of Jamaican business, February 14, 1922 would be have to be cited as one of the most significant dates, for it marks the establishment of GraceKennedy Limited, a company which has become one of the most recognised and respected names in Caribbean business today.
GraceKennedy Limited is an outstanding example of how small enterprises, fortified by Caribbean skills and determination, can produce impressive results. By the 1930s, the small firm which had started out operating from one location in downtown Kingston had become the representative of thirty-two overseas manufacturers, importing a wide variety of goods from flour, rice and pickled fish and meats to liquors, silks and even steel safes.
This remarkable growth was to be maintained over the next five decades as the Company continued to explore new avenues of growth and new business opportunities. Beginning life with a staff of 17, the Company now has over 2000 employees operating in two divisions: GK Foods and GK Investments. These divisions have established their operations in both the regional and international arenas. The GK Foods has offices in North America, Central America and the United Kingdom and exports Grace brand and other Jamaican products to 25 countries worldwide. In 2006 GraceKennedy recorded revenue increase of 9.3%, moving from J$33.03 billion in 2005 to J$ 36.09 billion in 2006 while earning net profit attributable to stockholders rising to J$1.85 billion compared with J$ 2.07 billion.
